What is health coaching at the Wisconsin Institute of Functional Medicine?
Health coaching is a collaborative, patient-centered service designed to help you put your care plan into action. Instead of navigating lifestyle changes on your own, you work one-on-one with a dedicated coach who helps you:
- Understand your personalized care plan and what each recommendation means for your daily life
- Navigate nutrition, movement, and lifestyle changes at a pace that works for you
- Build habits that support long-term health, not short-term fixes
- Work through obstacles, confusion, or overwhelm as they come up
- Stay accountable and on track between medical visits
Your health coach works alongside your provider to reinforce clinical recommendations and translate them into real, everyday action.

How can you work with a health coach at WIFM?
Health coaching is about far more than a meal plan. Your coach provides personalized support across the areas that have the biggest impact on how you feel and how you progress. Areas of focus include:
- Nutritional coaching and meal planning: practical support for eating well within your real life, including help with grocery lists, recipes, and building meals around your care plan
- Physical activity and exercise guidance: support starting a new fitness program, creating realistic exercise plans, and maximizing your results based on your individual goals and current health status
- Specialized nutrition for dietary restrictions and medical conditions: guidance for gluten-free and gluten-intolerance needs, dairy-free diets, low-FODMAP diets, autoimmune conditions including autoimmune thyroid disorders, and other medically necessary dietary modifications
- Lifestyle, stress, and sleep support: sustainable patterns that support recovery, energy, and emotional well-being
- Understanding your provider’s recommendations: clear, actionable next steps so you always know what to do between visits
- Goal setting and progress tracking: staying focused on what matters most and measuring meaningful progress over time including objective body composition data from your InBody scan where it is part of your care
Health coaching does not replace your medical care. It enhances it.

Health coaching helps with dietary restrictions
Many of our patients need to navigate dietary restrictions while still eating in a way that is balanced, sustainable, and enjoyable. Your health coach can help you manage gluten-free and gluten-intolerance needs, dairy-free diets, low-FODMAP diets, autoimmune conditions including autoimmune thyroid disorders, and other medically necessary modifications. The goal is never to make food more complicated. It is to help you maintain a healthy, balanced diet with confidence, even when you are working within real limitations.

How does health coaching work with your functional medicine care?
When you receive care through WIFM, your health coach works closely with your functional medicine provider so that everyone is working from the same personalized health plan. This collaborative approach creates a cohesive patient experience and improves continuity of care. By partnering with your medical team, your coach can reinforce your provider’s recommendations, support you as you put them into practice, and help you achieve better outcomes. You get one consistent plan and a team that is aligned around your goals.

What a typical coaching journey looks like
We begin by looking at the full picture of your health. Together we review:
- Your daily schedule and typical food choices
- Your daily habits around food, such as snacking, late-night eating, and intermittent fasting
- Your goals, whether that is weight loss, building muscle, or overall health
- Your current workout routine and activity levels
From there, we assess whether your current habits are moving you toward your goals or away from them. Where it is part of your care, we use your InBody body composition scan to set a clear baseline, so we can track changes in muscle and body fat over time rather than relying on the scale alone. Then we build new, small habits over time, so that progress feels manageable rather than overwhelming. The aim is to help you use nutrition and movement to become strong, healthy, and resilient as you age.

Can a health coach support you while you are on a GLP-1 medication?
Yes. Many of the patients we coach are on GLP-1 medications, and coaching is one of the best ways to protect your long-term results. Your coach helps make sure you are eating enough to maintain muscle, supporting your metabolism, and fueling your long-term health. Where it is part of your care, periodic InBody scans help confirm that the weight you are losing is fat rather than muscle, so your results stay strong and sustainable. If you are exploring or already using GLP-1 support. If you are exploring or already using GLP-1 support through our medical weight loss program, health coaching helps you get the most from it.

Who health coaching is for
Health coaching is a great fit if you:
- Feel overwhelmed by nutrition or lifestyle changes and are not sure where to start
- Want consistent support and someone to help you stay accountable
- Are managing chronic or complex health concerns and need guidance between visits
- Are transitioning into maintenance or longevity-focused care
- Want help applying lab-based recommendations to your day-to-day routine
We work with both men and women, whether you are a new or established patient or seeing us just for nutrition coaching. You do not need to be a current functional medicine patient to benefit.

Our coaching philosophy
We believe lasting health comes from sustainable change, not perfection. Our coaching focuses on three simple ideas:
- Simplicity: we keep things clear and avoid overwhelm, because food and movement do not have to be complicated
- Actionable steps: we give you small, manageable changes to start with, so you always know your next move
- Progress over perfection: consistent, realistic effort matters far more than getting everything right every time
Our goal is for every patient to leave feeling empowered, clear on where to start, and confident they have a plan they can actually follow.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to be a current WIFM patient to work with a health coach?
No. Health coaching is available to both established WIFM patients and new individuals who simply want structured guidance and accountability. You are also welcome to see us just for nutrition coaching.
Is health coaching only about nutrition?
No. While nutrition is a big part of it, your coach also supports physical activity and exercise, dietary restrictions, lifestyle and stress habits, sleep, and the day-to-day accountability that helps changes stick.
Can a health coach help me start exercising or build a fitness routine?
Yes. Your coach can help you start a new fitness program, create a realistic exercise plan, and get the most from your workouts based on your individual goals and current health status.
Can you help with gluten-free, dairy-free, or low-FODMAP diets?
Yes. Your coach can help you navigate gluten-free and gluten-intolerance needs, dairy-free diets, low-FODMAP diets, autoimmune conditions including autoimmune thyroid disorders, and other medically necessary dietary modifications, while keeping your diet balanced and realistic.
Do you track progress with an InBody body composition scan?
Where it is part of your care at WIFM, your coach can use InBody scans to set a baseline and track changes in muscle, body fat, and other measures over time. This gives you and your provider objective data on how your plan is working, beyond what the scale shows.
I am on a GLP-1 medication. Can health coaching help?
Yes. Coaching helps you eat enough to maintain muscle, support your metabolism, and fuel your long-term health while on a GLP-1 medication, so your results are strong and sustainable.
How is health coaching different from seeing my provider?
Your provider sets your clinical care plan. Your health coach helps you carry it out in daily life. Coaching enhances your medical care rather than replacing it, and your coach works closely with your provider so everyone stays aligned around the same plan.
