- Recovered from Guillain-Barré syndrome
- Able to move without a walker
- Lots of energy
- Lost 53 pounds
In March 2020, forty-year-old Nikki, married and mom to three kids, received the vaccine for COVID-19 and subsequently developed a recurrence of Guillain-Barré syndrome, a rare neurological disorder where the body’s immune system attacks the nerves. By the time she arrived at the hospital, she was already paralyzed up to her knees.
Prior to this frightening experience, Nikki’s health had already been affected after a partial hysterectomy due to endometriosis in 2012. She experienced weight gain and increased inflammation, two concerns that worsened in 2019 without any apparent reason. Fast-forward to post-vaccine and Nikki needed a walker and rigorous physical therapy in the hopes of someday walking independently again. It was Nikki’s in-home nurse who recommended Dr. Page at Wisconsin Institute of Functional Medicine (WIFM), as she had helped her in the past.
“By June of that year, my inflammation was the highest it had ever been,” Nikki recalled. “The rehab from Guillain-Barré was extremely painful as my nerves started waking up. Plus, I’d continued to gain weight and was constantly tired.”
Despite the challenges she faced, Nikki made an appointment with Dr. Page and embarked on her journey to recovery.
When Nikki first met with Dr. Page, she was still using a walker. Her bloodwork and vitamin levels were “all over the charts” and her estrogen, progesterone and testosterone levels were all low. Dr. Page knew Nikki was a rare case. Her first priorities were getting Nikki’s inflammation down, restoring essential vitamins and minerals and optimizing her hormone levels. She knew Nikki’s mobility depended on making her body as healthy as possible.
Dr. Page recommended IV therapy to quickly replace depleted vitamins and minerals, which helped with nerve pain as feeling returned in Nikki’s legs and feet. To address Nikki’s immune system, Dr. Page used Natural Defense IV treatments, peptides and compounded medication to reduce inflammation. Hormones, vitamin D3 and an iron supplement were added to the protocol.
“Within a couple of months, I was off the walker and finally starting to feel good,” Nikki shared. “By six months, I was feeling better than I had in a long time. My energy skyrocketed.”
After three years in Dr. Page’s care, Nikki is down 53 pounds. She’s still a patient at WIFM for maintenance visits but weight loss is no longer a concern for her. When Nikki contracted COVID-19, she was able to get peptides to help support her immune system. Her results were so impressive that her daughter, mom, aunt, sisters and friends also began seeing Dr. Page.
“I honestly don’t know if I would be here today if it weren’t for Dr. Page,” Nikki admitted. “Even my husband is amazed by the energy I have now. I feel empowered and confident. I recommend Dr. Page to anyone who needs help with their health and wellness.”
Nikki’s Advice for Others
“As women, we often neglect ourselves and prioritize taking care of others, blaming our own health issues on stress,” Nikki said. “However, seeing a functional medicine doctor like Dr. Page has shown me that there are clinics and providers who truly understand women’s health. It’s wonderful to feel good and have energy, especially when life gets hectic. After struggling with my health for years and having a major health scare, I’m so glad I found her.”
