Helping Emily Balance Her Hormones and Thyroid to Improve Well-Being

For several years, Emily had been struggling with symptoms that posed a challenge to her well-being, and she was searching for some answers.
“I thought I was doing things to keep myself healthy,” she said. “But some of the things I was doing had negative effects on my body. I was putting myself through high-intensity workouts five days a week, intermittent fasting and keto, and trying to eat a low-calorie diet.”
Those activities paired with stress — as well as an IUD that was adding synthetic hormones to her body — were causing mood-related symptoms that were difficult to manage. Emily had the IUD removed after just nine weeks, but then gained 15 pounds in a short period of time. She also experienced symptoms of pre-menstrual dysphoric disorder, or PMDD. “I had all kinds of side effects and I felt like I was going crazy.”
Her doctor at the time suggested birth control pills and antidepressants. “I just really didn’t want to go that route,” Emily said.
Emily noticed her symptoms temporarily disappear when she became pregnant with her third child, who was born in early 2020. “About nine or ten months after she was born, the symptoms started coming back,” Emily said.
“I had spent a lot of money trying to find help, and nothing felt like it was working,” Emily recalled. “It was completely different once I found the Wisconsin Institute of Functional Medicine.”
Emily’s Journey
When Emily began seeing Dr. Tracy Page at WIFM, things changed. “I felt like it was the first time somebody was actually listening to me,” Emily said. “I love to learn about health—I’m not an expert by any means—but I felt like she treated me like I actually knew what I was talking about, which was huge.”
At WIFM, Emily underwent extensive testing, revealing issues with her thyroid, which was balanced with temporary medication. With some additional supplements and natural hormones, Emily noticed an immediate change that grew even better over the next few months. “It was like night and day,” she said. “I’m still taking the hormone supplement, because it makes me feel awesome, and the side effects I had been experiencing have virtually gone away.”
The feelings of depression, anxiety and panic attacks she had been experiencing prior to visiting WIFM have largely been resolved. Additionally, her sleep has vastly improved, and her weight has balanced.
“I’m definitely the fittest and healthiest that I’ve ever been,” Emily said.
